Preserving Hewett Family History

Friday, June 20th, 2014

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Hewett is one of the most common names in Brunswick County.

Brunswick County native Ron Hewett is spear-heading the effort to preserve a 200+ year-old grave site.

It’s believed to be the final resting place of the patriarch of the Hewett family Joseph Hewett Sr.

In 1795, Joseph was buried in a brick-walled plot on his property overlooking Holden Beach.

Over time, the head stone has been knocked over and the wall has deteriorated.

Now, Hewetts in the area want to reestablish the plot.

In years past, the Hewetts have had trouble with the current land owners, but now they have agreed to let them clean up the site.

He says it’s important because the Hewetts feel rooted in Brunswick County.

“It’s our duty to maintain those roots,” Hewett said. “…to continue to live in our community and to make sure our children and grandchildren understand exactly where they came from.”
