EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE: The Surgical Student

Wednesday, July 30th, 2014

***SEE SAVANNAH’S FULL STORY TONIGHT ON WWAY AT 11***

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — The new school year is slowly but surely getting closer and this week’s Extraordinary Person of the Week already has big plans for it. She’s headed to DC and going to meet nobel peace prize winners. She is one day going to be saving lives. Her name is Savannah Rea and this future surgical student is extraordinary.

It’s time to give this girl a hand! “You get to see all these great people like nobel peace prize winners,” Savannah Rea told us.

Savannah Rea will soon start 11th grade at West Brunswick High School.
This letter(from the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientist) could make her junior year a little less….’traumatic’.
“What line of work are you looking to get into?,” Daniel Seamans asked. “Trauma surgeon because I like the experience that everything is going to be different and you don’t know what you are going to get into,” Savannah replied.

What Savannah will be getting into this November is the Congress of Future Medical Leaders Program in Washington, DC.
It’s a three day event. An honors and invitation only program for the cream of the crop….the best in the biz…or in this case…the best who want to get in the medical…biz.

“I get a letter that will be sent to when I apply for colleges so I can get into medical school,” she said, describing one of the many benefits to being selected.

And her mother gave us some more details. “She could win a scholarship for 185k to any medical school in the US, meet prodigy students, she’ll witness a surgery and ask surgeon questions, and meet Nobel winners,” Tiffanie Inman(mother) said.

Oh yeah, Savannah has a pretty good teacher. Mom is one of the best with Brunswick County EMS as a paramedic and trainer.

“How does it feel to have your daughter follow in your footsteps?” Daniel asked. “It’s pretty cool,” mom replied.

Savannah leads the way at West Brunswick with honors and awards. She’s also President Elect of the Health Occupation Student Association.
And her class work proves she’s tough. “We did cow eyes, sheep hearts, and brains. (and that doesn’t gross you out?, Daniel asked) “No. It’s pretty cool.”

Practice makes perfect and Savannah, the excitement you show that will one day save lives is nothing short of…Extraordinary.

This honors only program was created to identify talent at the earliest ages.
It was Savannah’s grades and accomplishments as a sophomore that tipped medical leaders off.
It won’t be cheap…it does cost about a thousand dollars to make the trip…but the payoff for this future surgeon is obviously priceless.
