Wilmington businesses ready to hop on craft beer craze

Friday, July 18th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington is known for many things, but locally-made beer choices have limited.

That’s about to change, as some new breweries are getting ready to join the Port City’s beer scene.

Water, yeast, malt and hops are the four basic ingredients that create endless choices for beer lovers. With Asheville known as “Beer City USA,” the boom for locally-made craft breweries is making a statement across nation, and here in Wilmington, there’s no exception.

“It’s got access to beaches, an access to a great, funky, vibrant downtown scene, screen gems studio, so you got a mix of that,” said Rob Robinson, owner of Waterline Brewing Company. “You’ve got industrial, the river. Everything kind of comes together for everything we love about North Carolina down here in Wilmington.”

For Wilmington’s Flytrap Brewing, it’s all about the community.

“It’s really important to see breweries developing from native Wilmington and from people who live here and seeing the craft beers scene grow organically from here,” Flytrap owner Mike Barlas said.

With all the possibilities, he says he can’t answer what his favorite beer is.

“Depends on what I’m eating, what’s the weather live, what mood I’m in,” Barlas said. “That’s one of my favorite things about beer, that even though there are so many styles your preferences can line up to that style.”

Flytrap hopes to be serving beer this fall at 4th and Walnut streets. Waterline Brewing Company will start 2015 off with many beers on tap at its new facility on Surrey Street under the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. Both companies hope to grow the industry from the support of the community.

City leaders are working on new regulations to help foster the growth of breweries in wilmington.

The companies plan to reach out to bars and venues downtown in hopes to expand the variety local craft beers.
