State regulators to pursue legal action against Calvary Cemetery owner

Friday, July 18th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — State regulators plan to take legal action against the owner of a Wilmington cemetery who has struggled to keep the grounds maintained.

At their quarterly public meeting this week the NC Cemetery Commission discussed Calvary Memorial Cemetery, and questioned owner Jack Krupicka about the conditions of the facility. Family members have complained for years about the overgrown grass, trash and other issues at the cemetery. Earlier this year the City of Wilmington began fining Krupicka for code violations.

After some discussion, the Cemetery Commission unanimously decided to seek an injunction and have a receiver appointed for the cemetery. The commission will also notify the New Hanover County District Attorney about what it says are Krupicka’s criminal actions.

A commission spokeswoman says the action against Krupicka could take some time. In the meantime the commission is looking for someone to volunteer to become the receiver of Calvary, should a judge rule to appoint one.

Man pistol-whipped, roommate finds suspect in living room

Friday, July 18th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say a man was attacked on his front porch last night, then his roommate found the suspects in their living room.

Police say the 21-year-old man was sitting on the porch outside his apartment at 4014 Park Ave. around 10:40 p.m. when two black men, including one carrying a silver pistol, walked up from the side of the building. The victim told police the men told him to “give it up,” but he said he had nothing. That’s when he was hit in the face with the butt of the gun.

The victim said he was knocked out, but then got up and ran inside and upstairs to tell his roommate what happened. When the roommate came downstairs, he saw the suspects in the living room of the apartment. The suspects then ran out the door.

The roommate believed the suspects had gone around to the back of the apartment and entered through a sliding glass door. He looked outside and saw a light blue Ford Crown Vic or Mercury Grand Marquis with large, shiny rims circling the block several times.

Police say the suspects took the victim’s wallet when he was on the ground. The victim was taken to the hospital for a busted lip and a lost tooth.

One of the suspects is described as about 5’10”-6’0″ tall, 230-250 lbs. wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and a red bandana around his face. The second second suspect was also about 5’10”-6’0″ wearing black gym shorts.

If you have any information, call Wilmington Police.
