Trench collapse kills civilian at Fort Bragg

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

FORT BRAGG, NC (AP) — Fort Bragg officials say a construction worker was killed when a trench fell in on him as he was installing pipes.

Spokesman Adam Luther said the unidentified man was in a trench near the Ammunition Supply Point near the Pope Army Air Field side of the post on Thursday.

Luther said the worker was trying to connect two pieces of pipe when the roughly 15-foot trench gave way. He said it appears a large piece of dirt fell in, causing the walls of the trench to collapse.

Officials say the man is completely covered. It’s not known how long it will take to remove him from the trench. Another person was working at the site at the time of the accident, but there was no word on that person’s condition.

Child killed, charges not filed

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY)– A woman questioned in the death of a 2-year-old over the weekend has been arrested again. This time in Pender County for DWI and this is not her first run-in with the law.

28-year old Stevie Wallace was arrested for DWI after police say she was swerving all over the road.

She was arrested Tuesday night but not given a Breathalyzer instead her blood was submitted for testing with the state lab.

We went to her house in Pender County tonight. No one answered the door and neighbors tell us she hasn’t been home in some time.

She was questioned Saturday night after leaving a party in Hampstead after police say she ran over and killed a 2 year old boy.

No charges have been filed in that case.

The Pender County Sheriff’s office said they have not decided whether charges will be filed because they are waiting on evidence to get back from the state lab. They would not say what that evidence was

Wallace has also been arrested before for felony larceny and drug possession and trafficking charges.

She still has several drug related charges and moving violations outstanding in Pender County as well.

She was released from jail on that DWI charge on a $1,500 bond.

Another trial delay for former NC lawmaker

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — The new trial for former North Carolina Rep. Stephen LaRoque has been delayed again.

Attorney Elliot Abrams, a member of LaRoque’s defense team, said Thursday that the retrial has been moved from October to Feb. 2, 2015.

Abrams said the new date stems from delays in getting transcripts from the previous trial.

A federal judge last August signed an order partially granting a defense motion for a new trial after it was learned one juror had visited an Internal Revenue Service website during the trial to research tax laws at issue in the case. In February, a District Court judge ordered the retrial.

LaRoque was convicted on 10 counts involving theft from a non-profit receiving federal funds, money laundering and making false statements. The retrial involves the remaining two charges.

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Willie Nelson and the annual Farm Aid concert and food festival are coming to North Carolina.

The concert is scheduled for Sept. 13 in the Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh. It features performances by Nelson, who is Farm Aid president and co-founder, along with fellow board members John Mellencamp, Neil Young, and Dave Matthews. Local artists will also perform.

Those in attendance can eat food from vendors, meet local farmers and learn about cultivating land.

Tickets for the concert go on sale in August and prices range from $49 to $175. A limited number of pre-sale tickets will be available Friday.
