NC judge: Private school vouchers unconstitutional

Thursday, August 21st, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A North Carolina judge is ordering a stop to the use of taxpayer money to pay for tuition at private or religious schools.

Wake County Superior Court Judge Robert Hobgood ruled Thursday that the program is unconstitutional on several levels. Voucher advocates say they will appeal the decision.

Hobgood says the program pays for students to attend schools that are not obliged to meet state curriculum requirements, violating the state constitution’s guarantee for students to have an opportunity to a sound basic education.

Hobgood said it’s also unconstitutional for public funds to go to privately run and managed schools.

The judge said money cannot go to private schools. The state agency managing the funds says money that was planned for distribution earlier this week was stopped.

UPDATE: Police searching for masked men they say stole car, ransacked home

Thursday, August 21st, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are searching for three masked men they say used guns to force their way inside a Wilmington home before ransacking the place and stealing a car from the driveway.

It happened around 3:15 a.m. when officers say a man who lives inside a home in the 600 block of Meares Street was walking between houses to get to his car. That’s when they say trio, all wearing bandannas over their faces, forced their way inside the man’s house, holding him at gunpoint.

Police say the robbers ransacked the home, taking a set of keys while they were inside. They say the trio, who all had handguns, took off from the scene in a car parked in the driveway. Officers say the man who was robbed told them the car, which was a 2003 gray Infinity, belongs to his wife.

Wilmington Police say the robbers are described as three black males in dark clothing, one of them shorter than the other two tall men. They also say one of the men walks with a limp. WPD says no one was hurt during the crime, but say officers are still investigating.
