Mom charged with baby’s 2013 death

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Charlotte woman is accused in the death of her baby in Brunswick County.

Katherine Ann Jennings, 33, is in jail charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Luke Stephen Phillips was just eight months old when he died last year.

Jennings was arrested in Charlotte last night and brought back to Brunswick County. Warrants show police came to believe some time after the baby’s death that jennings was responsible for it.

This was not the first child Jennings lost. In 2012, she lost another son in a similar incident, according to the Charlotte Observer, where she was said to be sleeping and accidentally rolled over on the child.

The DA’s office says it has never filed charges in a case like this one before.

Romney headlining Tillis fundraiser in Charlotte

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Mitt Romney is appearing at a fundraiser in Charlotte for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Thom Tillis.

Tillis campaign spokesman Daniel Keylin said in an email that Romney was headlining the private event in Charlotte on Tuesday night.

The 2012 Republican presidential nominee and former Massachusetts governor has publicly supported Tillis since endorsing him on the eve of the May GOP primary.

Romney appeared recently on behalf of Republican House and Senate candidates in New Hampshire and Florida, and he was scheduled to appear at campaign events Tuesday in West Virginia.

Romney won North Carolina in the 2012 presidential election with just over 50 percent of the vote.

Tillis faces Democratic US Sen. Kay Hagan in November.
