National attention on NC students who developed date rape detecting nail polish

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Four North Carolina State University students are getting national media attention after announcing they are developing fingernail polish that changes colors when a date rape drug is present.

Their startup company says that, with the new product when a woman puts her fingertip in a drink, her nail polish will change colors in the presence of common date rape drugs like Rohypnol.

National newspapers in this country and Great Britain have covered their company, Undercover Colors.

The News and Observer of Raleigh reports the students developing the polish aren’t giving interviews. But the paper reports there have been other date-rape detectors proposed including drinking straws, coasters and lip gloss.

It reports that, while those innovations also made media splashes, few have reached the market.
