Dozens of jobs affected as Dosher looks to cut costs

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Dosher Memorial Hospital has announced some details of its plan to cut costs.

Hospital spokesman Kirk Singer says 31 employees will be laid off, and another 17 employees will have their hours reduced.

“It kind of hurts,” Dosher volunteer Verda Darrell said.

Darrell says she does not understand the decision. She wonders who will run the hospital once the expansion and renovations are done if this many employees are getting the boot.

But hospital leaders say the cut is necessary. Dosher lost roughly $1.3 million in the first nine months of the fiscal year. After adding revenue from Smithfield Township Hospital Tax, the hospital still shows a loss of $27,000.

“What I think about it are the people who are involved,” Darrell said. “Not so much the trustees, because they all have jobs, or they do whatever, however they perform what they have to do. but the people who work, and are families, especially single moms.”
