Police: Hit & run, chase end with car hitting building

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say the single-car crash that ended when the vehicle hit a pole and a building on Wooster Street this morning started with a hit and run in a restaurant parking lot.

Police say the call about the crash came in around 6:30 a.m., but crews continued clearing the road in the 1700 block of Wooster Street for at least an hour.

WPD spokeswoman Linda Rawley says a female driver hit a car in the Chick-Fil-A parking lot on oleander Drive. Rawley says the driver chased after the woman, who eventually crashed. EMS took the woman to the hospital. Police say she had a minor concussion. The other driver was cited for careless and reckless driving.

Dispatchers say the crash blocked both lanes of Wooster before crews opened one of them for traffic.

Crews working to clear scene after car crashes into pole on Wooster St.

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Crews are still working to clear the scene after dispatchers say a car crashed into a pole on Wooster Street near 17th Street early this morning.

They say the call came in around 6:30 a.m., but crews continued clearing the roadway in the 1700 block of Wooster Street for at least an hour. Dispatchers say both Wilmington Police and EMS responded to the scene, though there were no reports of injuries.

Dispatchers say the crash blocked both lanes there before crews opened one of them for through traffic. When our crew got to the scene, they say it appeared that the car also slammed into the side of a storage building near where the car came to a rest.

Dispatchers say only one car was involved in the accident. We are still working to get more details on the crash from Wilmington Police, and will update this story with any new information as it comes into our newsroom.
