Big Weekend for the Muscular Dystrophy Association

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This weekend the Muscular Dystrophy Association will host their annual MDA Show Strength Telethon right here on ABC.

The event raises money for research on a number of muscle related diseases, including ALS which recently gained a lot of attention through the viral Ice Bucket Challenge. Local organizers say that the partnership with ABE is important to help spread the word and inform as many people as possible about the needs of the organization.

Local fire stations are also joining the cause by participating in the Fill the Boot Campaign. This event is held by the International Association of Fire Fighters and supports MDA as well.

Beach business mixed this year

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This summer has been a bit of a mixed bag for business at area beaches.

What Michael Velez says, he says with a smile. Running Carolina Beach creamery has been a dream come true of sorts, a bit of a letdown too.

“Thank god that we haven’t had any hurricanes but the weather has been pretty severe at the wrong times,” Velez said.

A rainy summer means traffic hasn’t been what they’d hoped and because of that they’ll close next week.

Other businesses say this summer feels like it may be an early one. At the Seawitch Motel they aren’t slow.

“We are getting quite a bit of business,” said Stefan Romaldini, adding that the rain hasn’t helped, “you can’t make up for weather its gonna do, what its gonna do.”

At the creamery Velez says it’s tough watching a business suffer like this.

“Especially because we love the ice cream business because it’s very creative. We make all our own back here,” he said somberly.

Homemade ice cream served with a smile is just not enough this year.

“But you gotta keep going,” he said, “the suns coming up tomorrow again.”

Hoping if they’re lucky next summer the sun will shine on them.
