Penalty for removing Venus flytraps could increase

WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline.com) — The Venus flytrap, one of only six carnivorous plants native to the United States and one that has special significance to Craven County, gets added protection in a bill passed by the N.C. General Assembly.

It would make poaching the flytrap, a plant that catches and digests small insects and is native to parts of Eastern North Carolina, a class H felony as of Dec. 1. Flytraps exist in parts of the Croatan National Forest.

It is already a misdemeanor to take the plant, which the North Carolina History Project’s encyclopedia says now number as few as 35,000 left in their natural habitat.

Charlotte approves incentive deal for Sealed Air

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Charlotte City Council has approved an incentive package for Sealed Air Corp., which announced last month it’s moving its headquarters from New Jersey to North Carolina.

The package approved by city council Monday provides the company more than $4 million in local incentives over seven years. The local package for the move includes more than $1.6 million from Charlotte and more than $2.8 million from Mecklenburg County.

The move by Elmwood Park, New Jersey-based, Sealed Air is expected to create more than 1,200 jobs in the Charlotte area over the next three years.

Sealed Air Corp. makes Bubble Wrap protective cushioning, food packaging and cleaning products.

Sealed Air is consolidating some operations from New Jersey, Connecticut, Wisconsin and South Carolina in Charlotte at a cost of more than $50 million.
