Return to school brings nerves for kids, tears for moms and dads

Monday, August 25th, 2014

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Going back to school can be daunting for some kids… and their parents.

Today many school bells rang around the Cape Fear for the first time since spring, and kids hit the books again, while some moms and dads got a little emotional.

Sometimes the first day of school can be a little stressful.

“When we go into the classroom people are staring at you and makes you nervous,” said Kendall Billingsley, a fifth grader at Lincoln Middle School in Leland.

Parents feel the pit in their stomachs, too.

“It was nerve-racking, because I felt his nerves,” dad Edward Oldham said.

For Oldham, this feeling is new, but his jitters let up when his son Landon warmed up to the idea of kindergarten.

“He actually walked in, put his stuff down, and went to play,” dad said.

In another part of the school, Kelly Callihan said goodbye to her third graders.

“When I walk out the front door I’ll be crying,” she said. “I cry every year.”

Callihan admits she is no stranger to the first day of school tears, as she slowly walks back to the car.

“It doesn’t get any easier,” Callihan said. “I’ll cry on the way home.”

So while she waits at home, and tries to keep her mind busy.

“I’ll be watching the clock all day,” Callihan said.

She’s not the only one counting down the minutes until pick-up.

“I just can’t wait to get him back home and ask him how his first day was,” Oldham said.

Brunswick, Columbus, Bladen and Pender counties all went back to class this morning, along with Whiteville City Schools. New Hanover County Schools start tomorrow.
