Deputies investigating after several shots fired during drive-by in Bladenboro

Monday, August 25th, 2014

BLADENBORO, NC (WWAY) — Deputies are investigating after they say several fired shots during a drive-by shooting at a Bladenboro party early Sunday, sending one person to the hospital.

Bladen County Sheriff’s deputies say it happened on Twisted Hickory Road just before 4 a.m. That’s where witnesses told them a vehicle with several people inside pulled into the backyard of the party there and began shooting.

Deputies say after several shots were fired, the vehicle took off in an unknown direction. One person who was there at the time of the shooting was hit in the forearm and is now recovering in the hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.

They say witnesses were unable to give a description of the vehicle or its occupants. Though there was evidence of a large gathering at the home there, deputies say by the time law enforcement got to the scene, only a handful of people were left. Deputies do say a camper and another vehicle sitting in the backyard were also hit by bullets.

Deputies ask anyone with information to call the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office at (910)862-8141.

Deputies warn drivers to watch out on the roads as school starts up

Monday, August 25th, 2014

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — As hundreds of area students head back to school this week, law enforcement is warning drivers to watch out for kids and buses on the roads.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning all drivers to be extra vigilant. To be safe, deputies say adding an extra 15 minutes to your morning and afternoon commutes for all the added traffic is a smart start.

In addition to warning drivers to watch out for children crossing the streets, deputies in Brunswick County also say they are working with the school system to help patrol the streets.

“They are in the process of installing some cameras on their buses to assist us in enforcement of passing stopped school buses, Lt. Mark Trull said. “So, you might now see law enforcement there at the time it happens but cameras will be available and we will be reviewing those cameras with the Brunswick County School System.”

A district spokeswoman says one bus has the camera equipment installed so far, and there are five more waiting to be put in place. She says they hope to have those on the buses by December.

Police: Man assaulted with bat, knife while sleeping at own home

Monday, August 25th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police arrested a man they say used a bat and knife to beat another man who was asleep in his bed at his Wilmington home early Sunday.

When officers got to 1216 S. 8th Street just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday, they say they discovered a man badly beaten and covered in blood. Police say the man who was beaten, Elvis Romero, told them he was asleep in his bed until he was suddenly awaken by the assault by a man they say he recognized.

Police say Romero was home alone when Bryce A. Meinert came inside his home, beating him with both a bat and using a knife to cut him in the leg. During the assault, police say Meinhert demanded money from Romero.

Officers say Romero suffered severe blows to the head and face, sending him to the hospital where he is still recovering. Police say they later found Meinert, 20, on Tennessee Avenue after taking out warrants for his arrest. Meinert faces robbery and assault charges, and is in jail under $150,000 bond.
