LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A Leland man says he knows what really happened to former Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett. He claims Hewett’s death was “help gone wrong,” and that what we know right now is not the truth.
“He is the best sheriff we had, and he is the best sheriff we will ever have,” Ronnie Lewis said.
Hewett’s July 12 death in the New Hanover County Jail created a lot of questions.
Hewett was not just a sheriff in Brunswick County, but an icon. For folks like Lewis, his death did not mean the end.
Lewis says the way Hewett’s death was depicted in the video released by the New Hanover County Sheriff was the way officials wanted the story to be viewed, but not what really happened.
“Everyone will know the truth about the whole ordeal tonight of how it all started and ultimately how it all ended,” Lewis said.
A Facebook page Justice for Sheriff Ronald Hewett created since his death has nearly 2,000 likes. The group will hold a public meeting at
7 p.m. at Leland Community Park at 7 p.m.
A New Hanover County Sheriff’s spokesman declined to comment on the movement.
