WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Moving into a new apartment can be stressful, especially when the rooms are not exactly as promised.
UNCW senior Tara Odams says she was excited to move into her brand new apartment at the Progress 910. That is until she found out her floor plan had shrunk.
“It sounds like petty to be like, ‘Oh, my God. My closet is too small,’ but I feel like it’s more the principle of it, because they told us walk-in-closet like numerous times,” Odams said.
Odams says the rooms are different than what floor plans show.
“I walked in, and I saw the closet right here, and I was like, ‘OK. Maybe this isn’t my room,'” Odams said. “So I kind of walked back outside, and then I walked back in. And then I actually opened the closet, and I was like, ‘Wow! Like, not a walk-in closet.”
Christine Holt got a walk-in closet, but it was not the size she expected.
“Our closets are half the size of what the model was shown,” Holt said.
And the smaller closet is not the only problem.
“We had to pay for the whole month of August when we weren’t allowed to move in until the 16th,” Holt said.
Odams says she and her father contacted the apartment managers.
“They just kind of kept pushing us off to corporate, and we can’t do anything about it,” she said.
Odams says corporate offered an extra dresser or shelf, but there’s no room for it. They also offered a Visa gift card for $120. That’s $10 for each month of her lease. She says that is not enough and will not fix the problem. Odams says she wants a sincere apology and her monthly rent reduced to reflect the room changes.
Apartment managers said Thursday the corporate office would give us a statement, but we never heard back. We tried calling several times today, but again did not hear back.
