WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It took one young man about 265 hours to complete this project for the battleship…
Ronald Covil III aka “Tres” made two benches for folks to enjoy when visiting the battleship.
He made the benches made out of the original teak deck from the battleship, filling holes where screws held the planks to the ship.
He also made a commemorative sign that listed all the battle ribbons that were awarded to the ship during world war two.
His family was happy to celebrate the projects completion with a ceremony on the battleship this afternoon.
“When he gets older he has somewhere to bring his children to show them what he did one day. So I think it’s neat he’s made something that’s been here for a long time,” Tres’ mom Chandra said.
The completion of this project is something only two percent of all young men in scouting ever achieve. So the next time your looking to take a seat at the battleship and you find one of these benches, you’ll know you are sitting on hand crafted history.
