Death row inmate asks for new trial in murder of child

A local death row inmate, Shan Carter, who is charged with several counts of first degree murder is coming back to court this week to get a new trial.

Former cop accused of chase denied bond

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WPDE) — Hank Smith, the former police officer from North Carolina who police say led Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase Tuesday night was denied bond Sunday afternoon.

Smith barely spoke in court, except to respond to Judge Dennis Phipps, responding at all questions with “yes, Sir.” For the rest of the bond hearing, Smith was silent, looking down at times. He was not represented by an attorney.

The Horry County Police Department has charged Smith with one count of Attempted Murder, South Carolina Highway Patrol has charged him with one count of Failure to Stop for Blue Lights and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has charged him with seven counts of Attempted Murder. All these charges are from Tuesday’s chase.

UNCW’s Eldridge tied for 9th at Rees Jones Intercollegiate

Freshman Thomas Eldridge carded a one-over-par 73 in the opening round of the Rees Jones Intercollegiate and is in a 10-way tie for ninth after 18 holes. The Seahawks enter the second round in eighth.
