EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE: Historical Hands on Deck!

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

****SEE KIM’S EXTRAORDINARY VIDEO ON WWAY AT 11****

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In 1988, a woman would apply for a job aboard the USS North Carolina Battleship. She didn’t get it. Then the job reopened. She got it this go around! Now she is a key player in using her creativity to bring the life of Battleship North Carolina to life. What we have are historical hands on deck!

A few years ago….a little girl stood on the deck of the USS North Carolina Battleship. “I picked it(the dress seen in the picture) out for a special day on this trip because it’s patriotic,” Kim Robinson Wilcox told Daniel Seamans.
“It’s a red white and blue dress, and like everyone else, I’m standing next to a giant projectile,” she giggled.
A few years later…..that same girl would be in charge of that very ship’s museum.

“You’re not going to get rich working in a museum, let’s get that out of the way,” Kim said. “But there are so many fun things about this job, I meet tons of interesting people, I’m working someplace that, to me, is important. I mean, how many people work a job that has on-going meaning.”

Kim Robinson Wilcox has spent the last 24 and a half years living the life of former life(s) as the Battleship’s useum director. “I get to make connections, like solve mysteries, what’s the missing piece of the puzzle, I’m always having an ‘aha’ moment. ‘ohhhh that’s why they did this! oh my gosh, that’s that’s what this is for?,” Kim said.

So below deck we go(see video)

“One of the fun things that people get ticked at is….it’s very human(the ship), this belonged to one of our pharmacist mates, a quija board. We found it aboard this ship,” Kim said as she showed us to an area full of artifacts that may, or may not, see see the light of day.

“I remember showing this picture I found(see video)to my friend who teaches small children in sunday school at a baptist church and asked “would this offend you?’ She said everybody has buns, but my boss said no, my friend Paul Wieser had that quote, “Privacy. You lost that when you joined the Navy!”

You could say Kim is family. She knows all about this boy’s club.
And the stories she tells often follow those told by a sailor living out a final memory.
“So this 93 year old,” she said, “is on the ship this past Sunday and my volunteer said we left him in the war room to catch his breath because they had been crawling all over the ship. His family goes elsewhere, they get back, the man has a whole audience and everyone is in rapture listening to the man share his stories.”

Kim…what you do to keep the history of this ship from sinking….is Extraordinary!
