Lane closure leads to big traffic jam in Leland

Monday, September 29th, 2014

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A lane closure on the causeway between Leland and Wilmington has led to significant traffic back-ups in northern Brunswick County.

At about 8 p.m., US 74/76 East was backed up to about a mile east of the Mt. Misery Road exit, while traffic on US 17 North was moving well until the merge with 74/76. Earlier this evening drivers reported traffic backed up past Mt. Misery Road on 74/76 and to Lanvale Road on 17.

According to information the NC Department of Transportation handed out at a public meeting Tuesday, lane closures are allowed overnight starting at 8 p.m., but drivers reported cones out and the back-up beginning before 6 p.m.

The closure is part of the ongoing work to widen the causeway, which has led to numerous traffic jams in the last couple of months. According to the DOT’s information from Tuesday’s meeting, the closure must end by 6 a.m.

WWAY has tried to reach several representatives from the DOT. So far no one has returned our calls.
