UPDATE: Carolina Beach Boardwalk still open after fire

Friday, September 26th, 2014

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Firefighters were still at the Carolina Beach Beach boardwalk Thursday night cleaning up the aftermath of a fire there Thursday morning. But, the town manager said the boardwalk is still open for business.

As firefighters started the investigation into what caused the fire, New Hanover County dispatch released the 911 calls. At one point, there were so many calls that dispatch couldn’t answer them right away.

Firefighters say the arcade is a total loss, but Frank’s Pizza next door suffered minor damage. Firefighters say a shop behind the arcade was also damaged.

No one was hurt.

The owner of Britt’s Donuts says he was closing up shop for the season when he saw white clouds of smoke and called 911.

“It really flared up real…it got so bad that I had to go back down the alleyway. I couldn’t even hardly breathe, and it just escalated from there,” Bobby Nivens said.

He says strong winds fueled the fire, but he is just glad no one was hurt.

Officials say at the moment, the fire does not look suspicious.
