Charlotte doctors face drug charges

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Charlotte police have charged two eye doctors with drug trafficking after investigators said the doctors wrote fake hydrocodone prescriptions for some patients and stole the pills.

Police said in a statement that Dr. Benjamin Hobbs and Dr. Samuel Hobbs are each charged with trafficking in opiates, obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and larceny. The brothers own Clear View Eye Care.

The men were taken to jail. It was not clear if they have attorneys.

Investigators said victims told them the brothers wrote prescriptions for hydrocodone and asked that they return to the practice with the filled prescriptions. Police said while the victims were at Clear View Eye Care, some or all of the drugs were removed from the pill bottles.

The doctors have offices in Matthews and Charlotte.

Ex-NFL player sentenced for role in mortgage fraud

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — A former NFL player has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison and two years of supervised release for his role in a multi-million dollar mortgage fraud conspiracy.

U.S. Attorney Anne M. Tompkins says 43-year-old Jimmy Hitchcock was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty in June 2013 to mortgage fraud conspiracy, bank bribery conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy.

Court documents show Hitchcock engaged in a scheme that created bogus “official checks” that could make it look like buyers made down payments when they actually hadn’t.

Documents also say Hitchcock created other false documents to support the transactions and bribed a bank insider to provide bogus verifications of deposit to support the transactions.

Hitchcock played for three teams in eight NFL seasons, including the Carolina Panthers.

Secretary Foxx questions NC airport dispute

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx says the dispute over who controls Charlotte Douglas International Airport is what he calls “an unnecessary mess.”

The former Charlotte mayor told The Charlotte Observer he doesn’t know when the Federal Agitation Administration might make a decision.

Foxx said it would be best for local officials to decide control of the airport.

North Carolina lawmakers last year approved a plan to take control of the airport from the city and give it to a regional commission. They said that would prevent what they called “meddling” by the city.

Opponents called it a power grab by those outside the city.

The U.S. Transportation Department has said Foxx will not be involved in the decision under an ethics agreement.
