WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We’re reaching the start of flu season but the flu isn’t the only thing floating around right now
The mysterious respiratory virus that has had a large impact in the midwest now has reached North Carolina. Six cases have been confirmed as of Tuesday.
Registered nurse and New Hanover County health department health services manager Carla Turner says the Enterovirus D68 is one of about 100 known Entroviruses and though it’s been recognized for years this is the first big outbreak and kids are highly susceptible.
“We’re seeing it in children and we’re seeing them get sick very rapidly,” Turner said.
She suggests seek medical attention immediately if your child begins complaining about having trouble breathing.
Signs of the Enterovirus are runny noses, coughing, mouth sores, fever, body aches and wheezing.
Health professionals say they best advice to ward off this and any other virus will always be the same: WASH YOUR HANDS!
