Former police chief testifies in own defense; closings tomorrow

Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Closing arguments are scheduled for tomorrow morning in the trial for former Fair Bluff Police Chief Marty Lewis.

Today Lewis took the witness stand in his own defense at the Columbus County Courthouse in Whiteville.

The prosecutor had Lewis read some of his own text messages that were to former Town Clerk Tamika Packer and alleged drug dealer James Scott, but Lewis told the jury that talking to Scott and Packer were part of a larger drug transaction. Lewis told the jury he was using Scott as an informant. Lewis said he had been a drug agent for Fair Bluff for three months.

But then the prosecutor had the former chief read text messages between Lewis and Packer. Lewis referred to his own text messages with Packer as “sexting,” but he said these were part of the official drug investigation he was conducting.

“You just told us you were conducting an official investigation by asking Tamika Packer what turns her on?” prosecutor Chris Thomas asked.

“That is correct,” Lewis answered. “Via text.”

Finally Lewis told the jury he did not agree with the notes SBI investigator Adrienne Harvey testified to. Harvey told the jury last week that Lewis told her he was was ashamed. Lewis said this was taken out of context.

“At the end of your interview with Agent Harvey you told her you were ashamed,” Thomas said.

“I told her I was ashamed, because I had been arrested for doing my job,” Lewis said. “That was a mistranscription.”

Two more witnesses took the stand after Lewis to testify to his character.
