Wilmington Fire Department breaks ground for new station

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department broke ground for its new fire station on Cinema Drive today.

The $3.4 million station will replace Station 3 on Princess Place Drive and Station 4 on Wallace Avenue. It will have four bays, while most stations only have two or three. Assistant Chief Frank Blackley says it will have a community room for the public to use for meetings and more rooms for the firefighters.

“It will also have a little bit bigger workout area for the firefighters, because we’re promoting more health and wellness for them,” Blackley said.

Blackley says this location will be better for response times.

“What we were able to do was actually find these locations,” Blackley said. “This is really going to be closer to where our service delivery is and provide a little bit better service to the citizens by decreasing some response times.”

Blackley says the fire station should be up and running in about a year.

Local food bank gets a quarter-million eggs

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was an “egg-cellent” day for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina at Wilmington. North Carolina’s Commercial Egg Farmers gave more than a quarter million eggs to the organization.

The eggs were taken off the truck and sorted by the “egg-crew.” The donation is part of the Good Egg Project which helps encourage people to eat well.

“We have a responsibility as being food providers. We know that not everyone has the ability sometimes to put food on their table,” said John Brinn of Rose Acre Farms. “It’s what we feel is necessary. It’s what we’re here for, and we enjoy doing it whenever we have the opportunity.”

Organizers say each participating farmer donated 60,000 eggs each.
