FIRST ON 3: Former Leland cop indicted on attempted murder charges

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A grand jury has indicted the former Leland cop that led officers on a high-speed chase.

Prosecutor Lee Bollinger says Hank Smith is indicted on three counts attempted murder, three counts assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, and one county felony speeding to allude.

He says Smith is still in custody in a South Carolina Jail.

HAPPENING TONIGHT: DOT hosts public meeting on Leland traffic

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Drivers frustrated by the traffic in Leland will have the chance to sound off tonight.

The NC Department of Transportation is hosting a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Leland Middle School.

The DOT met with local leaders earlier this month to talk about potential fixes to traffic problems during the widening project on the causeway between Leland and Wilmington. That project won’t be finished for more than two years.

The construction has not changed the number of lanes heading in and out of Wilmington on US 17/74/76, but it has shifted and narrowed them. High volume is also leading to congestion. That’s why the causeway is being widened to begin with.

Wilmington Police respond to ShotSpotter alert

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police responded to a shotspotter alert early Tuesday morning.

Police said the alert was at 828 Campbell Street.

Wilmington Police spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay said officers found 9 shell casings in front of a home.

There was no damage found in the surrounding area.
