FIRST ON 3: Investigators found kiddie porn on former cop’s hard drive

Monday, September 22nd, 2014

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Days before investigators say a former Leland cop led them on a high-speed chase, they went to his house looking for a stash of kiddie porn.

Investigators seized cameras, a laptop, an iPad, and several CDs from Hank Smith’s Supply home, and it had some of what they were looking for.

A woman who lived with former Smith called police Sept. 8 and told them she found several pictures of children, including some in provocative positions, on Smith’s iPad. The next day, detectives searched the home and again a week later. They seized several items from the home, including a hard drive, where they say they found several images of prepubescent females with no clothes on lying in sexually explicit positions.

Search warrants detail what investigators were looking for and what they found. According to the warrants, they also found on that hard drive several pictures of Smith in his Leland Police Department uniform.

In the warrants investigators say it’s not the first time someone has found child porn on one of Smith’s computers. Another woman, who says she was in a relationship with Smith for three years about a decade ago, told detectives during her relationship with Smith that she found photos of naked girls and videos that were incestuous in nature in hidden files on his computer.

Yesterday, Smith was released from a hospital and booked into a jail in Horry County, SC, where the high-speed chase ended. A magistrate denied him bond.

Smith now faces nine counts of attempted murder, including two in Horry County and the rest from Brunswick County. South Carolina investigators also booked Smith on two weapons charges.

Driver who killed cyclist gets prison time, hug from victim’s mom

Tyler’s mother hugged Nemeth in the courtroom today. She says what happened was a tragedy for everyone involved.

“I’m not angry,” Beverly Tyler said. “I miss Zachary terribly. We all do. But anger is not gonna change that.”

Today a prosecutor said they do not believe Nemeth was impaired at the time of the crash, and that if she had stayed at the scene, she likely would have only faced a misdemeanor.
