UNCW employee let go after UNC academic fraud report

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The University of North Carolina system is reeling Wednesday night in what could be the biggest academic fraud in history.

According to a new report today, nearly 20 years of academic fraud took place at UNC Chapel Hill. And now, we know it could have local ties. Beth Bridger worked as an Academics Adviser for UNCW Athletics.

In the Chapel Hill investigation, a former Justice Department official found that more than 3,100 students, nearly half of them athletes, enrolled in classes they didn't have to show up for and received artificially inflated grades for research papers.

Beth Bridger was named in that report. A UNCW spokeswoman says Bridger was hired at UNCW in January of 2014 and was still in her probationary period and was "separated".

In the Chapel Hill investigation, a former Justice Department official found that more than 3,100 students, nearly half of them athletes, enrolled in classes they didn't have to show up for and received artificially inflated grades for research papers.

Bridger, who worked as a counselor for football players at UNC from 2006 to 2013, was named several times in that report, which describes her as being responsible for "steering" several UNC football players into the so-called "paper classes." She is also accused of helping convince a professor to continue the classes after a predecessor retired.

A UNCW spokeswoman says Bridger was hired at UNCW in January and was "separated" from the university while still in her probationary period.
