Schizophrenic patient accused of murdering mother captured in Duplin Co.

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

WARSAW, NC (WCTI) — The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office says a schizophrenic patient who escaped from a Staten Island, NY psychiatric center in July 2014 was captured near Warsaw, NC by Duplin County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

NC State Highway Patrol and the Wayne County Aviation Unit assisted in the search Thursday, October 16th says the sheriff’s office.

They report that Vadim Babyrev, 44, had been institutionalized after killing his mother by bludgeoning her to death with a clothing iron in 1999 in their Brooklyn home.

The sheriff’s office says a CSX railroad employee spotted Babyrev holding on to the side of a train between two railroad cars. The employee alerted authorities. The train conductor stopped the train near the DCSO deputy that had arrived on scene. The sheriff’s office says Babyrev took off running when he saw the deputy. A chase ensued through a wooded area, a chicken farm, and another wooded area near Isham Frederick and Willis Carr Roads in the Warsaw Community.

Fire officials: No smoke detectors in home where man died

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department said the home where a man died in a house fire did not have smoke detectors. The cause, however, is still under investigation.

The fire happened at 4308 Peachtree Avenue 10:00 p.m. Sunday. Neighbors say they heard some kind of an explosion. Investigators said Steven Dale Worsham, 54, died in the incident.

“I heard a loud explosion and then some pops behind it,” Christine Lyons said. “It definitely went up really quick. By the time firefighters got here, it was gone.”

Investigators said the fire started in the sleeping area, and smoking materials were found. Officials are still working to determine if those materials caused the incident. The home was being renovated when the fire started. Worsham’s friend and neighbor, Anthony Parker, said the victim remodeled homes for a living.

Arson was ruled out as a potential cause.

Fire officials said they will be walking around that neighborhood this weekend to bring awareness to the importance of having working smoke detectors in all homes.
