UNCW students host run to the polls

Friday, October 31st, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was literally a race to the polls. UNCW Students and Wilmington residents walked, ran and biked to make their early vote count in the first ever ‘Run to the Polls’ race.

‘Run to the Polls’ was a project put on by UNCW’s Election Campaign Communication Class. UNCW Professor Jennifer Brubaker says organizing the event has given students hands-on experience with campaign management.

“Our goal is to mobilize student voters. Trying to get them excited, get them interested and get them out to vote.” She said. “But then also to make them informed voters. So that they are not just going out and voting, that they are actually knowing what they’re voting for.”

Brubaker said she was extremely pleased with the turn out and hopes to see the event grow in the future. Local candidates and Mayor Bill Saffo showed up to support the cause and congratulate the students on their participation.
