Coast Guard Cutter Diligence back home in Wilmington

The Coast Guard Cutter Diligence returned to port in the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington.The US Coast Guard vessel had been out on the seas for the past 45 days supporting Operation Southeast Watch in the Windward Pass between Cuba and Haiti.Under Operation Southeast Watch, the Coast Guard works alongside interagency and international partners to prevent and respond to illegal maritime migration in the Caribbean Sea and Florida Straits.Copyright 2014 WECT. Spending, mudslinging up in US Senate race

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s the most expensive race in US Senate history the airwaves have been flooded with mudslinging from both sides. Thom Tillis and Kay Hagan are battling it out in the Tarheel State for your vote.

Thursday Speaker Tillis and Senator Hagan both campaigned in Wilmington and both stuck to their traditional stump speeches.

Tillis criticizing Hagan for her ties to President Obama. Hagan hitting Tillis on his record in Raleigh.

Tillis didn’t want to talk to reporters but Hagan did. We asked questions though about the campaigns negative turn to both of them.

“Actually our race is getting pretty positive I’ll let the other side speak for themselves,” Tillis said.

“The fact that Charles and David Koch have attacked me over and over and over again for Thom Tillis is wrong,” said Hagan.

Between the two campaigns, and outside groups, more than $100-million has been spent on this race.

WWAY SURPRISE SQUAD: Gift card giveaway

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — To celebrate our 50th anniversary, WWAY formed the Surprise Squad.

We teamed up with Perry's Emporium and have been around the area buying everything from school supplies to gas. This week, folks can buy whatever they want, thanks to a free gift card from the Surprise Squad.

The Southport, Oak Island Chamber of Commerce is giving away a free $100 gift card to a lucky person who buys a gift card during kick off week. It ends Sunday, so you'll want to hurry up.
