Mary C. Williams Elementary staff goes reverse Trick-or-Treating

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Teachers from Mary C. Williams Elementary School in Wilmington made the best of their half day by loading buses with candy, pencils, books and other goodies to do some very special Trick-or-Treating.

The staff went reverse Trick-or-Treating by bringing the goodies to the children at their homes. Teachers say this event is a great way to get out in the community and get kids excited about school.

The kids were grinning from ear to ear as they took their treats home to enjoy and share with their families.

Lane closures planned for Snow’s Cut Bridge

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The NCDOT is planning daytime lane closers on the Snow’s Cut Bridge next week.

The intermittent closures start Monday and continue through Wednesday. They will between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day weather permitting.

The closures are necessary for crews to perform concrete repairs on the bridge between mainland New Hanover County and Pleasure Island. The bridge will remain open to traffic during the work.

Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.

Man who tried to rape 11-year-old heading to prison for decades

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Tabor City man will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for trying to rape a child three years ago.

A Columbus County jury convicted Calvin Sherwood Watts, 52, of attempted rape of a child under 13, first degree kidnapping and three counts of statutory sex offense, the District Attorney’s Office says. A judge sentenced him to between 41 years five months and 51 years three months in prison.

Prosecutors say on June 25-26, 2011, Watts kept an 11-year-old girl at his home. They say while moving her from room to room he sexually assaulted her multiple times and tried to rape her. Watts also threatened to hurt her and her family if she reported the crimes, prosecutors say.
