New Hanover Co. School Board candidates debate tonight

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Early voting is underway and Election Day is just eight days away, but it’s never too late to get to know the candidates.

Tonight WWAY and HQR News 91.3fm host the final of a series of candidate forums this election season. This one features the candidates for New Hanover County School Board.

The field for four open seats includes Democratic challengers Tom Gale Chris Meek and Emma Saunder and Republican challenger Bruce Shell. They are opposing three Republican incumbents: Janice Cavenaugh, Don Hayes and Ed Higgins.

WHQR’s Rachel Lewis Hilburn and WWAY’s Makenzi Henderson will co-moderate the debate. It’s 7-9 p.m. at WHQR studios at 254 N. Front St. You can also watch it live here on WWAYTV3.com. We will have a recap on WWAY NewsChannel 3 at 11 p.m.

Walkers aim to prevent suicide

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Every 13 minutes someone commits suicide in the United States, resulting in more than 39,500 lives lost each year.

In an effort to lower those statics and raise awareness, hundreds of people came out Sunday for the “Out of the Darkness Walk” in Wrightsville Beach.

According to the event’s website walkers raised more than $23,000 this year.

Participant dies during Beach2Battleship Triathlon

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A participant in the 7th annual PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon has died after a medical emergency during Saturday’s event.

During a news conference late Saturday night, organizers said Roger Ackerman 68, died from a cardiac episode during the swim portion this morning.

Ackerman had heart problems prior to the event, but was giving approval by his doctor to participate in the half marathon.

According to a news release earlier in the day, from the Wilmington Family YMCA and Set Up Events, event staff responded and provided emergency care.

Event organizers say they will conduct a thorough investigation based on the incident and further examination.
