Monday, October 27th, 2014

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Coast Guard has release the identity of the man who died in a scuba diving accident Saturday night off the coast of Carolina Beach.

According to officials the Coast Guard was notified when a body was discovered floating and unresponsive off the coast. Officials said the man who was found has been identified as Caleb Batson.

Investigators say the first mate of the Cheerio Lady found Batson, the captain, floating near the boat face down and wearing scuba gear. Batson was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Sunday afternoon a crowd of two dozen people gathered to pay their respects at the marina where the Cheerio Lady was docked. The sign for the boat was decorated with flowers.

Crews rescue woman with head injury after sailboat runs aground

Monday, October 27th, 2014

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Coast Guard crews rescued a woman with a head injury after a sailboat ran aground near Seagate Sunday afternoon.

Around 3:15 p.m., crews got a call reporting a 38-foot Sundancer sailboat that was grounded about a mile south of Bradley Creek near Money Island. A man, a woman and two children were aboard the boat when the accident happened.

The Coast Guard station at Wrightsville Beach launched a rescue boat and crew, while a good Samaritan helped the children to another boat. When rescue crews arrived at the scene, the woman was taken to Bradley Creek Marina, where she was taken to the hospital by EMS.

Coast Guard crews say the woman was reported in stable condition from her head injury. At last check, TowBoat U.S. was still working to float the grounded sailboat, which was just outside the channel.

WFD raises smoke alarm awareness after fatal fire

Monday, October 27th, 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After a fatal fire on Peachtree Ave last week, the Wilmington Fire Department decided to walk the neighborhood, educate neighbors and install smoke alarms in home that need them.

WFD went door-to-door hoping to save more lives in the future by helping prevent fires like the one that killed Steven Worsham, 54, last week.

“Three fourths of the people in the nation that die from residential house fires do not have working smoke alarms in their home,” Battalion Chief Randy Burton said.

It’s when we least expect it when we have the highest risk.

“From 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. traditionally,” Burton said. “Those are sleeping hours when folks are sleep.”

The flames are not your only threat.

“When you’re asleep, you cannot smell smoke,” Burton said. “Some people think you can, but you cannot. Your olfactory senses, your smelling senses, go away in a deep sleep. That is the reason for a smoke alarm; to alert you when you’re in a deep sleep, so you can have an escape plan to get out of your home.”

Your escape plan should include two ways out of your home and a meeting place outside.

Experts say most fires are caused by cooking, smoking or electrical, but having a working smoke alarm doubles your chances of surviving a fire and what could be a life or death situation.

If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, notify the Wilmington Fire Department, and they will come out and provide you with one.
