WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s National Food Day, and local organizations gathered at UNCW to celebrate.
Feast Down East, also known as the Southeastern North Carolina Food Systems Program (SENCFS), organized the event on campus Friday. The purpose is to educate people on the fun and interactive ways to stay healthy. From a sustainable foods fair, educational workshops and even a kale eating contest, volunteers hope to bring awareness to healthy living and supporting local farmers.
“A lot of them have difficulties competing with a lot of the bigger companies. So what we do is try to connect them with communities through different freshmarkets … we work with different school systems in the area,” volunteer Justin Brantley said.
Brantley said buying locally allows people to support their own economy and said it’s important to provide the public with resources to make eating healthy easy.
“We try and bring access to resources into those communities so that people are able to get access to healthy foods without riding the bus all day to get around town,” Brantley said.
Volunteers also hope to this event impacts college students.
“A lot of them have a difficult time eating healthy foods regularly and this is common especially in a university setting so we’re trying to encourage university students especially to try and buy local and eat healthy foods,” Brantley said.
Many restaurants and businesses will be running Food Day specials, including 22 North, Brasserie du Soleil, Pine Valley Market, Tidal Creek Co-op, Bento Box, Dub’s Cafe, The German Cafe, and Surf House-Carolina Beach.
