Wilmington man shot to death in parking lot

WILMINGTON — A Wilmington man was shot and killed Tuesday night on Metting Road.Carlton Walker Whitley, 25, died as a result of the shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex at the corner of Darlington and Metting roads, said Wilmington Police Department Cpl. Leslie Irving.According to Irving, officers were responding to a reported dispute when the call was upgraded to shots fired. When police arrived at the scene, Whitley was lying in the parking lot with gunshot wounds, and evidence of gunfire littered the parking lot and nearby vehicles.Whitley was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Irving said.The first call to 911 came in at 11:15 p.m., dispatch records indicate."Somebody just got shot at Market North," a woman said. "I don’t know the address. It’s on Metting Road."As the dispatcher directs the caller on how to administer CPR, Whitley’s girlfriend calls 911.She is so distraught that she is unable to clearly give an address until a minute into the call."I need an ambulance on Market North now," she screams, pleading with the dispatcher to send help.And then she pleads with Whitley to stay alive. "Baby, I need you," she wails. "Carlton, we need you, baby, please."Public records show Whitley was a new father to a daughter born in April.Police have not said what precipitated the shooting.A weapon was recovered in the area, but it was not known Wednesday if it was connected to the incident. Irving declined to comment on any evidence recovered from the scene.No arrest has been made. On his Facebook page, Whitley lists Sanford as his hometown.Whitley’s death is the fifth homicide investigation for the Wilmington Police Department this year and the ninth homicide investigation in the entire county.Anyone with information can anonymously submit a tip through Text-A-Tip. Teen shot following dispute near Greentree Apartments

WILMINGTON – An 18-year-old man was shot just after 5 p.m. following a two-person dispute Wednesday off Greentree Road near the Greentree Apartments, police said.The man was shot multiple times in the chest and was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, said Lt. Rodney Dawson with the Wilmington Police Department. Police located the victim outside, said Cathryn Lindsay, WPD spokeswoman.The man’s condition wasn’t known, but Dawson said the victim was conscious and alert when police arrived.As of 7 p.m., a person of interest had been in contact with police and was cooperating, Dawson said. A large crime scene perimeter was set up near the apartments because of multiple blood splatters and trails of blood in the area.Anyone with information is asked to call police at 910-343-3609.
