7 area high schools received a warning from the U.S Department of Education

Seven of our area high schools have received a warning from the U.S Department of Education. Warning were issued to the schools across our state who did not have 95 percent of their students take the states standardized tests for the 2014-2015 school year. The high schools in our area who received that warning are: Eugene Ashley High, John T. Hoggard High, New Hanover High, Pender High, West Columbus, East Columbus, and South Columbus High Schools.

Seal sighted on Surf City beach

A little more than a week after a seal was spotted on North Topsail Beach, one appeared on a Surf City beach on Thursday. The seal was photographed with a telephoto lens at about 10 a.m. near the 9th Street Beach Access, according to Surf City officials. The seal was estimated to be about four feet long. Officials with the Fort Fisher Aquarium say that though such occurrences are rare, it is not unheard of for seals to take a pit stop along the N.C. coast. Seals&nbsp…
