Oil spill closes northbound portion of U.S. 17 in Leland

A minor wreck was slowing mid-day traffic on U.S. 17 in Leland.
A tractor-trailer driven by an Ocean Isle Beach man was rear-ended about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the entrance to Brunswick Forest, slowing traffic on northbound U.S. 17.
No one was injured.

Area projects on state stimulus list

Gov. Mike Easley got Council of State approval Tuesday for a $744 million effort to stimulate the state’s economy with fast-tracked construction projects, some of which could affect Southeastern North Carolina.
In the package is a $5 million project to replace a berth at the Port of Wilmington.

An extensive network of nonprofits is making Southeastern North Carolina a better place to live. Laurie Paarlberg aims to make our nonprofits better.
She’s an assistant professor in the master’s of public administration program at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. It trains planners, municipal administrators and town managers.

Authorities investigating four smash ‘n’ grabs in Wilmington

Authorities are investigating four store break-ins at businesses in Wilmington and New Hanover County which occurred Monday and Tuesday and appear similar, officials said.
In at least three of the cases, thieves entered stores by smashing out a front window or door.

Lawyer for Port City Java founder disputes allegations
