The charming city of Wilmington North Carolina, also known as the Port City, is located in the southeastern corner of North Carolina between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. The eighth largest city in the state is not just a tourist town, although Wilmington does have many features that attract visitors from all over the world.

The mile-long Riverwalk area runs along the Cape Fear river in historic downtown Wilmington. Sitting just across the river is the World War II era battleship USS North Carolina, which is now a memorial and museum.

Other popular attractions include Airlie Gardens, historic mansions and Screen Gem Studios where TV shows and movies such as Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill and Iron Man 3 were filmed.

Wilmington is a popular destination because of its moderate, four-season climate, historic preservation district and annual events such as the Azalea Festival and Wilmington Riverfest. Wilmington also has numerous championship golf courses in and around the city.

The nearby Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure Beaches offer a wide range of water sports from boating and fishing to surfing and jetski riding. For beachcomers, sunbathers and the less adventurous, the soft sand and ocean breeze make for a relaxing day at the beach. Rounding out the charms of Wilmington, NC is the local cuisine - a seafood lovers delight.



The city has more than 106,000 residents and is home to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. It is also home to a regional visual and performing arts center, a regional medical center and to Screen Gems Studios - North Carolina, one of the largest motion picture and television studios outside of Hollywood.

Wilmington, the county seat of New Hanover County, was incorporated in about 1739 and was originally situated on seven hills located on the east side of the Cape Fear River. It was named in honor of Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, who was a patron of North Carolina's Governor at the time. To this day, visitors are reminded of its rich history by the grand old homes and tree-lined boulevards making Wilmington one of the most beautiful small cities in the south.
