202 Nun Street
Wilmington, NC 28401

The Verandas is a Victorian Italianate Mansion located in Wilmington's Historic District at 202 Nun Street, only two blocks from downtown Wilmington's scenic Cape Fear Riverfront. Originally built in 1853 by Benjamin Beery, the structure suffered extensive fire and water damage in 1992. Boarded up and decaying, the mansion was purchased in May 1995 by the present owners, Chuck Pennington and Dennis Madsen, who proceeded with extensive restoration for which they have received several awards.
The
Verandas' eight elegantly appointed guestrooms are large corner rooms
with individual climate control. Guests may choose from a selection of
king or queen beds with hand-ironed sheets and pillowcases. The
luxurious private baths feature marble floors and oversized oval tubs.
The inn is decorated with American, French and English antiques and
original artwork. Each room has an inviting and distinctive look and
feel. Cable TV, VCRs, and telephones with computer jacks are standard,
suitable for leisure and business travelers.

"As a Johansens Inspector, I
look for many qualities in a property that may appeal to the
independent traveler who is looking for a unique experience," states
Inspector Susannah MacPherson. "I was immediately impressed with the
Verandas, from the architecture to the hospitality offered by the
innkeepers Chuck Pennington and Dennis Madsen. Their attention to
detail is incredible; from the restoration of the building to each
room, which have been impeccably decorated. The details, such as the
wonderful linens on each bed to the toiletries that have been
carefully chosen. With all these considerations The Verandas is the
epitome of excellence that our readers seek. Wilmington certainly must
be very proud to offer such a gem to its visitors."
