Wrightsville beach is nearest to Wilmington. Just take Eastwood road (Hwy 74) east from Wilmington across the Intracoastal Waterway and you will come to Wrightsville beach. It features a variety of water sports, restaurants and lodging as well as a fishing pier.

Carolina and Kure Beach are south of Wilmington on Pleasure Island. To get there from Wilmington take Carolina Beach road, also known as Highway 421. Carolina Beach features an old fashioned boardwalk with a variety of shops and a pier. Kure Beach is quiet and also has a fishing pier. At the south end of Kure Beach you will find the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.
